Cruising Alaska
By: Rajinder Dogra

Alaska, the state where natures startling contrasts capture the heart of everyone who visits, is on the A-list. In 2004, more cruise ships will be in sailing in Alaskan waters and offering multiple cruisetours as an accompaniment to popular cruises along the Inside Passage. Cruise companies are selling Alaskas interior as strongly as they are promoting cruising in Alaskan waters. Six times the size of Texas, Alaska is gigantic, dramatic, and popular.

The May to September cruise route to Alaska from the States or Vancouver normally includes the magnificent Inside Passage in south-central Alaska, which gives passengers an up close encounter with the abundance of Alaskan game, forested islands, and Alaskas compelling beauty. Here is a look at some of the new itineraries, new ships, and new ports of embarkation.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

With 19 different cruisetours in 2004 and two new ships - Serenade of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas - cruising to Alaska, Royal Caribbean Cruise line offers a lot of choices. Both ships also offer new upbeat features like rock-climbing walls and selfleveling pool tables. Private balconies attached to staterooms deliver the ultimate pleasure. From the privacy of one own balcony, guests can luxuriate in deck chairs as they watch humpback whales swimming by or birds fishing for lunch. It is a grand way to appreciate the magnificent beauty of the Hubbard Glacier with its startling contrasts of irradiant turquoise, brilliant white, and vivid blues as it spans the horizon. Private balconies make passengers feel as if nature is on parade for their private viewing.

In addition to Serenade of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, two other ships in Royal Caribbeans fleet, Radiance of the Seas and Vision of the Seas, offer 7-night cruises to and from Alaska. Both cruise the profoundly dramatic Hubbard Glacier area.

Royal Caribbeans primary push is to promote Alaskas spectacular interior with 9- night, 10-night, 11-night, 12-night, and 13-night cruisetours, all of which begin and end in Alaska. Each offers a combination of cruising with the interior land travel on a glass domed traincar, the only one between Seward and Anchorage, and/or luxury motorcoaches. Holland America

Holland Americas around-the-ship promenade deck is the best place to drink in Alaskas spellbinding blend of nature, peace and wilderness. With 7 ships cruising in Alaskan waters, their 5-star ships offer a wide selection of 7-day cruises. Tell clients to open their verandah door to hear the thunderous crash of glacier pieces as they tumble into the sea. For every sailing, Holland America invites native Alaskan artisans on board to show their arts and relate the intriguing tribal stories that are passed from generation to generation.

Every Holland America voyage on the Inside Passage cruises through Glacier Bay, renowned for its high, rugged mountains coated in ice. Holland Americas exclusive new itinerary for 2004 offers a phenomenal view of the twin Sawyer Glaciers of Tracy Arm. Their glacier discovery cruise travels along the Kenai Peninsula to Anchorage. This cruise doubles the pleasure with two sensational glacier-viewing experiences. With three cruisetours, Holland America focuses on the Klondike, the Wilderness, and Glaciers. You can sail roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver, or cruise 7-days from to Vancouver to Anchorage or vice versa. Contact: 800-426-0329
